What is Small Group Health Insurance?

In California, small group health insurance is an employer-sponsored plan for businesses with 1 to 100 eligible employees. Premiums are determined by employee age and ZIP code rather than individual medical histories. While coverage is optional for businesses under 50 employees, companies with 50+ full-time employees must offer it to comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Benefits of Offering Group Coverage

• Attract and Retain Talent: Competitive benefits packages are vital for attracting high-quality team members and minimizing turnover. • Boost Productivity: Investing in healthcare reduces sick days, leading to a healthier, happier, and more dependable workforce. • Offset Cost-of-Living Demands: Contributing to premiums reduces your employees' out-of-pocket expenses, easing financial pressures and reducing frequent wage-increase requests. • Tax Advantages: Most small businesses qualify for standard business deductions, and eligible employers can claim the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. • Hammer & Kaiser Partnership: Hammer Insurance works directly with Kaiser Permanente to build custom small group plans. If you have at least one eligible, non-spouse W-2 employee on your payroll, your business qualifies. • Various Plans & Carriers: Employers are not limited to only Kaiser Permanente plans; we can also quote you with a variety of other carriers so that you can make an informed decision when deciding on what carrier and plan works best for your needs.

FAQ

What qualifies as a small group?

A California business with 1 to 100 full-time or full-time-equivalent (FTE) employees. The group must include at least one W-2 worker who is not the business owner or the owner’s spouse.

Does the employer have to pay for coverage?

Yes. Employers are required to contribute at least 50% of the employee-only premium, and the plan choice must remain ACA-compliant.

Can employees enroll their families?

Yes. Employers must allow workers to add eligible dependents (spouses, domestic partners, and children). However, you are only legally required to sponsor the employee's portion of the premium.

Can we switch from our current insurance carrier?

Yes. Existing group plans can be terminated at any time. Moving to a new provider triggers a new Open Enrollment period for your staff.
